Significance: In Exodus 24:11, Israel's seventy elders ascend the mountain, see God, and "ate and drank" (וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׁתּוּ, vayokhelu vayishtu) in His presence — a covenant meal on the mountain of God that should have meant death but instead brought fellowship. Isaiah 25:6 transforms this exclusive mountaintop meal for Israel's leaders into a universal feast: "On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a banquet for all the peoples." Both meals take place on God's mountain, both involve eating and drinking in the divine presence, but Isaiah dramatically expands the guest list from seventy-four Israelite leaders to all nations, and what follows the feast is the abolition of death itself (25:7-8).
