Text: Isaiah 30:2
OT Text Referred to: 2 Kings 18:21
Subject: depending on Egypt
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Echo
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Isaiah 30:2 condemns Judah for going "down to Egypt... to seek shelter under Pharaoh's protection" without consulting the LORD, while in 2 Kings 18:21, the Rabshakeh mockingly exposes the same futile strategy: Egypt is a "splintered reed of a staff" (מִשְׁעֶנֶת הַקָּנֶה, mish'enet haqaneh) that will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Both texts address the same historical crisis — Hezekiah-era Judah's attempt to secure Egyptian military support against Assyria. Isaiah condemns the alliance from a prophetic standpoint as rebellion against God's sovereignty, while the Assyrian official unwittingly confirms Isaiah's assessment from a political standpoint: Egypt cannot deliver.
