Subject: Sennacherib's envoys challenge Jerusalem — parallel account

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: These are parallel accounts of the Rabshakeh's speech at Jerusalem's walls during Sennacherib's invasion. Both texts record nearly identical dialogue: the Assyrian envoy's challenge in Hebrew before the people on the wall, his mockery of trust in Egypt and in Yahweh, and the demand for surrender. The verbal agreement is so close that this represents one of the most extensive parallel passages in the OT. The Rabshakeh's theological argument — "Has any god delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?" — sets up both Hezekiah's prayer and Isaiah's oracle of deliverance, making this speech the theological hinge of the entire Assyrian crisis narrative.
