Isaiah 43:7 to Genesis 1

Text: Isaiah 43:7

OT Text Referred to: Genesis 1

Subject: Israel's creator, redeemer, and provider

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Significance: Isaiah 43:7 piles up three creation verbs: "everyone called by My name, whom I created (בְּרָאתִיו, berativ) for My glory, whom I formed (יְצַרְתִּיו, yetsartiv) and made (עֲשִׂיתִיו, asitiv)." These three verbs — בָּרָא, יָצַר, עָשָׂה — echo Genesis 1-2 where they describe God's creative work (בָּרָא in Gen 1:1, 27; עָשָׂה in Gen 1:7, 16, 25, 31; יָצַר in Gen 2:7-8). Isaiah's layering of all three creation verbs for Israel's formation as a people presents the nation's existence as a deliberate divine creative act comparable in significance to the original creation itself. Just as humanity was made in God's image for His glory, Israel was formed for the specific purpose of declaring God's praise (43:21).
