Isaiah 6:8 to Genesis 11:7

Text: Isaiah 6:8

OT Text Referred to: Genesis 11:7

Subject: Divine Plural Pronouns

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Echo

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Both texts employ the striking divine plural "Us" in divine speech. In Genesis 11:7, God declares "Come, let Us go down" (הָבָה נֵרְדָה, havah nerdah) to confuse humanity's language at Babel. Isaiah 6:8 echoes this plural when the Lord asks from His heavenly throne, "Who will go for Us?" (מִי יֵלֶךְ לָנוּ, mi yelekh lanu). The first-person plural in both texts points to a divine council or plurality within God, yet with dramatically different purposes: at Babel the "going" produces judgment and confusion, while in Isaiah's throne room the "going" commissions a prophetic messenger. The contrast in tone -- from scattering to sending -- highlights how the same divine prerogative that judged rebellious humanity now seeks a willing servant to speak to His people.
