Text: Jeremiah 1:6
OT Text Referred to: Exodus 4:10
Subject: prophet deflects commissioning based on poor speech
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Typology
Significance: Both Jeremiah and Moses respond to God's commission with protests about their inability to speak. Moses claims he is "slow of speech and tongue" (כְבַד־פֶּה וּכְבַד לָשׁוֹן, kevad peh ukevad lashon), while Jeremiah protests "I do not know how to speak, for I am only a child" (נַעַר, na'ar). In both cases, God overrides the objection not by enhancing the prophet's natural ability but by promising divine enablement — "I will help you as you speak" (Exod 4:12) and "I have put My words in your mouth" (Jer 1:9). Jeremiah's call narrative deliberately mirrors the Mosaic pattern, presenting Jeremiah as standing in the same prophetic succession: reluctant vessel, divine override, commissioned speech.
