Text: Jeremiah 27:16
OT Text Referred to: 2 Chronicles 36:7
Subject: removal of temple vessels
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Jeremiah 27:16 addresses false prophets who promise that the temple vessels (כְּלֵי בֵית יְהוָה, kelei beit YHWH) taken to Babylon will be swiftly returned, while 2 Chronicles 36:7 records the historical fact that "Nebuchadnezzar also carried some of the articles of the house of the LORD to Babylon and placed them in his temple." Jeremiah contradicts the false prophets' optimistic timeline, prophesying that the remaining vessels will also be taken to Babylon and will stay there "until the day I attend to them" (27:22). The Chronicler's account confirms Jeremiah's prediction — the vessels were indeed removed — and Ezra 1:7-11 later records their return under Cyrus. The vessels become a tangible symbol of the exile's reality and God's faithfulness to restore what was taken.
