Significance: Jeremiah 29:14-16 echoes the "bad figs" vision of Jeremiah 24:8-10. In chapter 24, God declares that Zedekiah and the Jerusalem remnant are like figs "so bad they cannot be eaten" (תְּאֵנִים הָרָעוֹת, te'enim hara'ot), destined for "sword, famine, and plague" (24:10). Chapter 29:17-18 repeats this triad — "sword, famine, and plague" — against those remaining in Jerusalem, using the same language of making them "an object of horror... a reproach and a curse" among the nations. The verbal repetition across these two oracles establishes a consistent prophetic verdict: the Jerusalem remnant under Zedekiah, not the Babylonian exiles, is the condemned community. This inner-Jeremianic repetition reinforces the prophet's paradoxical message that submission to exile is the path to God's favor.
