Text: Jeremiah 7:9

OT Text Referred to: Exodus 20:13

Subject: murder prohibition cited in temple sermon

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Anchor Text: Exod 20 — The Decalogue

Significance: Exodus 20:13 prohibits murder (לֹא תִרְצָח, lo tirtsach), and Jeremiah 7:9 catalogues Israel's violations of the Decalogue in his temple sermon: "Will you steal, murder (רָצֹחַ, ratsoach), commit adultery, swear falsely...?" Jeremiah's list deliberately echoes the sequence and vocabulary of the Ten Commandments, exposing the hypocrisy of those who violate the covenant law and then "come and stand before Me in this house" expecting divine protection. The prophet's indictment transforms the Decalogue from a received code into a prosecutorial instrument—the same commandments given at Sinai become the terms of judgment against the temple community.
