Hosea 12:4 to Genesis 35:15

Text: Hosea 12:4

OT Text Referred to: Genesis 35:15

Subject: Bethel as Site of Divine Encounter

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Genesis 35:15 records Jacob naming the place where God spoke with him בֵּית־אֵל (beth-el, "house of God"), and Hosea 12:4 recalls this same encounter: "he found Him at Bethel and spoke with Him there." Hosea draws on the patriarchal Bethel tradition to indict Israel's current corruption of that very site, which by his day had become a center of idolatrous worship. The prophet's point is that the God who met Jacob at Bethel and renewed the covenant is the same LORD whom Israel now dishonors at that location. By echoing the Genesis narrative, Hosea sharpens the contrast between Jacob's genuine encounter with God and his descendants' faithless worship.
