Text: Joel 3:10
OT Text Referred to: Isaiah 2:4
Subject: Plowshares and swords (reversed)
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Contrast
Significance: Joel 3:10 deliberately reverses the imagery of Isaiah 2:4, commanding nations to "beat your plowshares into swords" (כִּתּוּ אִתֵּיכֶם לַחֲרָבוֹת, kittu ittekhem lacharavot) rather than swords into plowshares. Isaiah envisions an eschatological peace in which Yahweh judges between nations and warfare ceases; Joel summons the nations to arm themselves for battle precisely so that Yahweh can execute final judgment upon them in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. The inversion is rhetorically powerful: the nations are ironically invited to prepare for the very war they cannot win. This contrast establishes that Isaiah's vision of universal peace comes only through the prior reality of divine judgment that Joel describes—peace follows the decisive defeat of God's enemies.
