Text: Obadiah 1
OT Text Referred to: Jeremiah 49:14-16
Subject: Envoy sent against Edom
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Direct Quotation
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Obadiah 1 and Jeremiah 49:14-16 share nearly verbatim language describing a divine envoy sent among the nations to summon them against Edom: שְׁמוּעָה שָׁמַעְנוּ מֵאֵת יְהוָה וְצִיר בַּגּוֹיִם שֻׁלָּח (shemu'ah shama'nu me'et YHWH wetsir baggoyim shullach, "We have heard a message from the LORD; an envoy has been sent among the nations"). Both texts continue with Edom's pride and rock-dwelling arrogance. Jeremiah 49:15-16 adds detail about Edom's terror-inspiring reputation and self-deception, while Obadiah is more compressed. The scholarly consensus is that one prophet drew upon the other (or both drew from a common prophetic tradition against Edom), making this one of the clearest cases of direct prophetic quotation in the OT.
