Text: Obadiah 5
OT Text Referred to: Jeremiah 49:7
Subject: Edom's total plundering
Source: John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible (1763)
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Obadiah 5 uses the imagery of thieves and grape gatherers to emphasize that Edom's devastation will exceed ordinary plundering: even thieves steal only what they want, and grape gatherers leave gleanings, but Esau will be completely ransacked. Jeremiah 49:7 opens the Edom oracle with a different angle—questioning whether wisdom (חָכְמָה, chokhmah) remains in Teman, famous for its sages (cf. Eliphaz the Temanite). Together the texts portray Edom as stripped of both material wealth (Obadiah) and intellectual reputation (Jeremiah). Both prophets declare that Edom's traditional sources of security—hidden mountain treasures and renowned wisdom—will utterly fail under divine judgment.
