Haggai 2:3 to Ezra 3:12

Text: Haggai 2:3

OT Text Referred to: Ezra 3:12

Subject: Divine glory and presence

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Significance: Ezra 3:12 records that "many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the first temple, wept with a loud voice" (בְּכוֹ בְקוֹל גָּדוֹל) when they saw the foundation of the new temple. Haggai 2:3 asks the identical question: "Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory?" (בִּכְבוֹדוֹ הָרִאשׁוֹן). Both texts address the painful disparity between the remembered splendor of Solomon's temple and the diminished reality of the second. Haggai's response transcends this grief with the promise that "the glory of this latter house will be greater than the former" (2:9), a prophetic word that reframes the elders' weeping as premature since YHWH's plans for the second temple exceed what memory can compare.
