Zechariah 2:11 to Isaiah 56:1-8

Text: Zechariah 2:11

OT Text Referred to: Isaiah 56:1-8

Subject: Nations joined to Yahweh

Source: Albert Barnes, Notes on the Bible (1834)

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Significance: Zechariah 2:11 declares, "On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD (וְנִלְווּ גוֹיִם רַבִּים אֶל־יְהוָה, venilvu goyim rabbim el-YHWH) and they will become My people," echoing Isaiah 56:3-6 where foreigners "join themselves to the LORD" (הַנִּלְוִים עַל־יְהוָה, hannilvim al-YHWH) and are welcomed into His house of prayer. Both texts use the same verb לָוָה (lavah, "to join/attach oneself to") for Gentile incorporation into the covenant community. Isaiah 56 specifies that foreigners who keep the sabbath and hold fast to the covenant will be welcomed; Zechariah broadens the vision to "many nations" becoming God's people. Together they develop the Gentile inclusion trajectory from individual foreigners (Isaiah) to multinational participation (Zechariah) in the eschatological community.
