Zechariah 4:10 to 2 Chronicles 16:9

Text: Zechariah 4:10

OT Text Referred to: 2 Chronicles 16:9

Subject: Eyes of Yahweh range through the earth

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Significance: The seer Hanani rebukes Asa with the declaration "the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him" (einei YHWH meshotetot be-khol ha-arets, 2 Chr 16:9). Zechariah 4:10 uses strikingly similar language: "these seven...are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth" (einei YHWH hemmah meshotetim be-khol ha-arets). Both texts share the identical participial phrase meshotetot/meshotetim ("ranging throughout") applied to divine eyes surveying the earth. This shared imagery presents God as the all-seeing sovereign who actively seeks those loyal to Him—a warning to Asa and a comfort to Zechariah's post-exilic audience rebuilding the temple.
