Malachi 1:13 to Deuteronomy 15:21

Text: Malachi 1:13

OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 15:21

Subject: Defective sacrifices (B)

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Contrast

Significance: Malachi 1:13 condemns priests for offering "stolen, lame, or sick" animals, directly violating Deuteronomy 15:21's prohibition: "If it has any defect -- is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw (מוּם, mum) -- you shall not sacrifice it to the LORD your God." Both texts use the vocabulary of physical blemish (lame, blind, sick) as disqualifiers for sacrificial acceptability. Malachi's indictment reveals that the postexilic priesthood was systematically violating the Deuteronomic standard, not from ignorance but from contempt -- they dismissed God's altar as "a nuisance" while offering Him what they would never dare present to a human governor (Mal 1:8).
