Galatians 3:26-29

Context: Galatians 3:26-29 follows immediately after Paul's identification of Christ as the singular Seed (v. 16) and his argument that the law served as a guardian "until Christ came" (v. 24). Now Paul draws the revolutionary implication: all who are united to Christ by faith become Abraham's offspring and heirs of the promise. "In Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise." This passage marks the great expansion of the seed promise: after narrowing to one Seed (Christ), it now widens to include all who belong to Him, regardless of ethnicity, social status, or gender.

Christological Connection: Galatians 3:26-29 reveals the mechanism by which the singular Seed generates the promised multitude. After the seed promise narrowed through millennia of redemptive history to one Person -- Christ -- it now expands through union with that one Person to include an innumerable company from every nation. The logic is rigorously Christological: believers are Abraham's offspring not in their own right but because they are "in Christ Jesus" (v. 26) and have "put on Christ" (v. 27). Seed identity is entirely mediated through the Seed.

The language of "putting on Christ" (ἐνδύω, enduō) suggests a clothing metaphor that recalls the high-priestly garments of the old covenant. Just as Aaron wore garments "for glory and beauty" to serve as mediator, believers are clothed with Christ Himself. But the escalation is radical: under the old covenant, only one man wore the garments of mediation; under the new covenant, all believers are "clothed" with the Mediator and share His identity as Abraham's seed. The old covenant's restrictive seed identity (one nation, one priestly tribe, one high priest) gives way to the new covenant's universal seed identity (all who are Christ's, from every nation).

Paul's declaration that "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female" (v. 28) does not erase these distinctions ontologically but declares them irrelevant for seed identity and covenant standing. The old order defined Abraham's seed by ethnicity (Jew), status (free), and gender (male, for covenant sign). The new order defines Abraham's seed by one criterion alone: union with Christ. This fulfills the universal scope of the original Abrahamic promise ("in your offspring shall all the nations be blessed," Genesis 22:18) while simultaneously explaining how the singular ("your offspring, who is Christ," Galatians 3:16) and the plural ("as the stars of heaven," Genesis 22:17) dimensions of the promise are both satisfied. Christ is the one Seed; those in Christ are the many seeds. The narrowing was for the sake of the broadening. God narrowed the line to one so that through that one, all nations could be included.

The result is stated in covenantal-legal terms: believers are "heirs according to promise" (κληρονόμοι κατ᾽ ἐπαγγελίαν, klēronomoi kat' epaggelian). The inheritance is not earned by law-keeping or claimed by genealogy but received by promise through faith. What God promised to Abraham's seed -- land, blessing, relationship with God -- belongs to everyone who is in Christ. The seed promise achieves its fullest expression: one Seed inherits everything; all who belong to the Seed inherit with Him.
