Psalm 8:4-6

Hebrew Key Terms:

  • H582 אֱנוֹשׁ (enosh) - man, mortal, frail humanity
  • H1121 בֶּן (ben) - son
  • H120 אָדָם (adam) - man, mankind
  • H5849 עָטַר (atar) - to crown, surround with honor
  • H3519 כָּבוֹד (kavod) - glory, honor, weight

Context: A psalm of David reflecting on God's majestic creation (heavens, moon, stars) and humanity's paradoxical position—insignificant compared to the cosmos yet crowned with glory and given dominion over all creation. The psalm bookends with worship: 'O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!' (vv. 1, 9).

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Echoes Genesis 1:26-28 dominion mandate but adds the element of wonder: how can such frail creatures ('son of man') be given such exalted status?
  • Later prophets (especially Ezekiel) use 'son of man' to emphasize human frailty and mortality (Ezekiel is addressed as 'son of man' 90+ times)
  • Psalm 80:17 develops this into a messianic plea for 'the son of man whom you made strong for yourself'

Connections:

Christological Connection: Hebrews 2:6-9 provides the authoritative christological interpretation: 'We do not yet see everything in subjection to him' (human dominion unfulfilled), 'but we see Jesus... crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death.' Jesus fulfills Psalm 8 by becoming truly human ('son of man'), being made 'lower than the angels for a little while' (incarnation and humiliation), then being crowned with glory through resurrection. The pathway to dominion is suffering: Jesus tastes death for everyone, then receives the universal subjection promised in Psalm 8. Paul applies verse 6 ('all things under his feet') to Christ's resurrection victory (1 Corinthians 15:27) and present reign (Ephesians 1:22). What Adam lost through disobedience, Christ regains through obedient suffering. Believers share in this dominion as they are conformed to Christ's image (Romans 8:29) and will reign with Him (Revelation 22:5).

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking); Redemptive-Historical Progression — Hebrews 2:6-9 authoritatively applies the psalm's "son of man" crowned with glory and dominion to Jesus, who fulfills humanity's unfulfilled dominion mandate through suffering, death, and resurrection-exaltation.
