Daniel 7:13-14

Aramaic Key Terms:

  • H1247 בַּר (bar) - son (Aramaic)
  • H606 אֱנָשׁ (enash) - man, mankind (Aramaic)
  • H6050 עֲנַן (anan) - cloud (Aramaic)
  • H6268 עַתִּיק (attiq) - ancient, aged one
  • H7985 שָׁלְטָן (shaltan) - dominion, authority (Aramaic)

Context: Daniel 7 presents a night vision of four beasts arising from the sea (Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome—vv. 1-8), followed by the heavenly throne room scene: the Ancient of Days takes His seat (vv. 9-10), the beasts are judged (vv. 11-12), then 'one like a son of man' comes with clouds, approaches the Ancient of Days, and receives everlasting dominion (vv. 13-14). Later, the angel interprets: the saints of the Most High receive the kingdom (vv. 18, 22, 27), but the vision itself focuses on the individual 'son of man' figure.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Synthesizes Psalm 8 (son of man crowned with dominion) with divine theophany (cloud-riding YHWH—Exodus 13:21; Psalm 104:3; Isaiah 19:1)
  • The 'coming with clouds' is divine prerogative throughout OT: only YHWH rides the clouds as His chariot
  • This figure receives worship ('all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him'—v. 14), language elsewhere reserved for God alone
  • Contrast with beasts (animal kingdoms) highlights this figure's humanity, yet His heavenly origin ('coming with clouds') and divine authority transcend mere humanity

Connections:

Christological Connection: Jesus identifies Himself as the Danielic Son of Man throughout His ministry. At His trial, He declares: 'You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven' (Mark 14:62), directly quoting Daniel 7:13. The high priest tears his robes, recognizing the claim to divine status. Jesus' use of 'Son of Man' is strategic: it affirms true humanity while claiming transcendent authority. He comes 'with clouds' (Matthew 24:30; 26:64; Mark 13:26; Luke 21:27), receives 'all authority in heaven and earth' (Matthew 28:18 = Daniel 7:14 dominion), and exercises divine prerogatives (forgiveness, Sabbath lordship). Stephen's vision confirms Jesus is this figure: 'the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God' (Acts 7:56). Revelation depicts Christ as 'one like a son of man' (1:13; 14:14), coming on clouds (1:7), executing judgment. The suffering servant who was crucified is the exalted Son of Man who will return in glory, fulfilling Daniel's vision of the human-yet-divine figure who receives everlasting dominion over all nations.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — Daniel's vision of "one like a son of man" receiving everlasting dominion from the Ancient of Days is a forward-looking prophetic type that Jesus explicitly claims as fulfilled in Himself (Mark 14:62), combining divine cloud-riding prerogative with human identity.
