  • G40 ἅγιος (hagios) - "holy"

Context: Acts 2:1-11 narrates the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost. The disciples, gathered in Jerusalem, receive the Spirit with signs of wind and fire. They begin speaking "in other tongues" (ἑτέραις γλώσσαις, v. 4), and the multinational crowd "from every nation under heaven" (v. 5) hears them "declaring the wonders of God" in their own languages (vv. 8, 11). Luke lists 15 nations/regions (vv. 9-11), echoing Genesis 10's Table of Nations. What Babel divided, Pentecost reunites.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • The nations list (vv. 9-11) deliberately echoes Genesis 10's Table of Nations—the same peoples scattered at Babel now hear the gospel in their own tongues.
  • "Every nation under heaven" (πάντος ἔθνους τῶν ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν) recalls the universal scope of Babel's scattering.
  • Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 (vv. 17-21), connecting the Spirit's outpouring to OT prophecy of the "last days."
  • The phrase "wonders of God" (τὰ μεγαλεῖα τοῦ θεοῦ) echoes LXX language for God's mighty acts (cf. Deut 11:2).

Connections:

  • TO OT: Genesis 11:1-9 (Babel's confusion), Genesis 10 (Table of Nations), Joel 2:28-32 (Spirit poured out)
  • FROM ACTS: Acts 2:41 (3,000 added—gathering vs. scattering), Acts 10:44-46 (Gentile Pentecost)
  • NT PARALLELS: 1 Corinthians 12:13 (baptized into one body), Ephesians 2:14-18 (one new humanity)

Christological Connection: Pentecost is Christ's work through His Spirit to reverse Babel. (1) Christ Pours Out the Spirit: Peter explains: "Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear" (Acts 2:33). The risen Christ sends the Spirit who enables this Babel-reversal. (2) Gathering the Scattered: Jesus came "to gather together in one the children of God who are scattered abroad" (John 11:52). Pentecost begins this gathering: 3,000 added (v. 41), then continuous growth (v. 47). (3) Wonders of God = Gospel: The "wonders of God" they proclaimed was Christ—His death, resurrection, and exaltation (vv. 22-36). The clear speech of Pentecost is Christ-centered proclamation. (4) One Spirit, One Body: "For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit" (1 Cor 12:13). The Spirit creates the unity Babel's builders failed to achieve. (5) Firstfruits: Just as Pentecost celebrated harvest firstfruits, these multilingual believers are "firstfruits" of the greater harvest from every nation (Rev 7:9).

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Backward-Looking), Promise-Fulfillment — Pentecost is the Spirit-enabled reversal of Babel's division: the nations list (Acts 2:9-11) echoes Genesis 10, and the risen Christ pours out the Spirit (Acts 2:33) who enables clear multilingual proclamation, fulfilling both Zephaniah's "pure lips" promise and the Abrahamic blessing for all nations.
