Revelation 22:4

Greek Key Terms:

Context: Revelation 22:1-5 describes the new creation's eternal state—the tree of life restored, the curse removed, God's throne established, and His servants worshiping Him. Verse 4 presents the climax of redemptive history: "They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads." This fulfills what the entire biblical narrative has been moving toward—unhindered, face-to-face access to God's presence, the veil removed forever, the barrier sin created destroyed eternally.

Connections:

Christological Connection: Revelation 22:4's promise "they will see his face" is the climactic fulfillment of Christ's work in removing the veil that separated humanity from God's holy presence. From Genesis 3:24 onward, cherubim barred access to God's presence and the tree of life. The veil in the tabernacle, embroidered with cherubim (Exodus 26:31), embodied this exclusion. Exodus 33:20 declared the old covenant's restriction: "you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live." For 1,500 years, only the high priest once yearly could approach God's presence behind the veil, and even then indirectly through protective incense (Leviticus 16:13). But when Christ died, "the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom" (Matthew 27:51)—God Himself ripping open the barrier. Through Christ's torn flesh (the torn veil, Hebrews 10:20), believers now have "confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus" (Hebrews 10:19). But this access reaches perfect consummation in the new creation: "they will see his face"—the very thing that was death-threatening under the old covenant becomes the redeemed's eternal joy. What Moses was denied—"you cannot see my face... and live"—the redeemed will experience forever. The cherubim that excluded from the tree of life (Genesis 3:24) are gone; the tree is restored (Revelation 22:2); face-to-face access is granted. Paul's promise "then face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12) and John's promise "we shall see him as he is" (1 John 3:2) find fulfillment here. Christ's sacrifice accomplished what the law could never do—remove sin's barrier permanently, grant unhindered access to God's presence eternally, and bring the redeemed into face-to-face communion with God forever.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment; Redemptive-Historical Progression — "They will see his face" consummates what Christ's death inaugurated, fulfilling the promise of unhindered access and reversing Exodus 33:20's prohibition at the climax of redemptive history.
