Significance: Takes departure from Mosaic love commands but transcends. Resembles yet exceeds Dead Sea community (which stressed love within but "everlasting hatred for men of pit," 1QS IX, 21-22). Jesus preaches love for enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). New standard: "as I have loved you" (sacrificial, humble service). Possibly alludes to new covenant involving inner transformation (Jeremiah 31; Ezekiel 36).
