Anchor Text: Deut 18:15-19 — A Prophet Like Moses

Significance: John's summary commandment — "believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ" — echoes Moses' prophecy of the Prophet like himself whom God would raise up: "whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him" (Deut 18:19). The command to "believe in His name" gains covenant-legal weight from the Deuteronomic background: the Prophet speaks "in God's name," and obedience to Him is not optional but divinely required. Peter explicitly identifies Jesus as this Prophet in Acts 3:22-23. John's "commandment to believe" is thus the New Covenant form of the Deuteronomic obligation to hear the Prophet God sends.
