Context: After the nearer kinsman refuses, Boaz publicly declares his redemption before ten elders: "You are witnesses today that I am buying from Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon. Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon's widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home" (vv. 9-10). The community blesses the union (v. 11), and Boaz and Ruth marry: "the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son" (v. 13). The women bless Naomi: "Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer" (v. 14).

OT-to-OT Development:

  • The public declaration "You are witnesses" (עֵדִים אַתֶּם) fulfills legal requirements and connects to covenant witness formulas (Deut 30:19; Josh 24:22).
  • The blessing "like Rachel and Leah" (v. 11) connects Ruth to Israel's matriarchs—a Moabitess becomes a mother of Israel.
  • "Blessed be the LORD" (בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה) is a recognition formula acknowledging God's providential work through human agency.

Connections:

  • TO OT: Leviticus 25:25 (kinsman redemption), Deuteronomy 25:5-6 (raising up name), Genesis 29-30 (Rachel and Leah building Israel)
  • FROM OT: Ruth 4:17-22 (genealogical result), 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant through this line)
  • FROM NT: Matthew 1:5 (Boaz in Christ's genealogy), 1 Corinthians 6:20; 7:23 ("you were bought at a price")

Christological Connection: Boaz's public redemption prefigures Christ's. (1) "You Are Witnesses": Boaz declares before witnesses; Christ's redemption is proclaimed before heaven and earth—"God did this publicly" (Rom 3:25, implication). (2) "I Have Acquired": Boaz buys Ruth; Christ "purchased" the church "with His own blood" (Acts 20:28). "You were bought at a price" (1 Cor 6:20). (3) "To Raise Up the Name": Boaz preserves Mahlon's legacy; Christ raises up spiritual offspring—"Here am I, and the children God has given Me" (Heb 2:13). (4) "Not Left Without a Redeemer": The women praise God that Naomi has a גֹּאֵל; believers praise God that we have a Redeemer: "In Him we have redemption" (Eph 1:7). (5) "The LORD Enabled Her": Ruth's conception is divine gift; spiritual birth is God's work—"born not of blood...but of God" (John 1:13). The redemption story culminates in new life, as Christ's redemption issues in resurrection life.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Forward-Looking) — Boaz's public redemption and marriage to Ruth, raising up offspring for the dead, prefigures Christ's public redemptive work and His union with His bride the church.
