Context: Ezekiel 1 records the prophet's inaugural vision in 593 BC during the Babylonian exile. Ezekiel, a priest among the exiles by the Chebar canal, sees "visions of God" (1:1). Verses 4-28 describe the theophany: a stormy wind, a great cloud with fire, and within it "the likeness of four living creatures" (1:5). Verses 5-14 detail these beings' appearance: human-like form, four faces (man, lion, ox, eagle), four wings, human hands, bronze legs, and movement synchronized with the Spirit. Verses 15-25 describe wheels beside each creature, and verses 26-28 reveal the throne above them with "the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD."

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme (primary), carried by Redemptive-Historical Progression — access to, and life in, God's presence, here shown as the throne-borne creatures who attend the glory. The cherubim texts do not cite or exegete one another, so no allusion-based method can be primary. Typology (secondary — Symbolic, symbol-become-typical, Forward-Looking): the four-faced living creatures are a visionary symbol, so by Vos's rule the typical force rests on the reality signified — the fullness of creaturely life in God's presence that believers receive in Christ — not on the emblem itself. (On Fairbairn's named lens the creatures depict ideal creaturehood; Owen and the historic majority read them as angelic ministers. The classification does not depend on settling the referent.)
Christological Connection: Ezekiel's cherubim prefigure glorified humanity in Christ:
- Four Faces = Fullness of Redeemed Humanity: The composite form (man, lion, ox, eagle) represents the perfection of creaturely life that believers will embody in glory. In Christ, believers are being restored to the image of God (man), reign as kings (lion), serve faithfully (ox), and have heavenly citizenship (eagle). The four faces show what glorified humanity will be: rational, regal, serving, transcendent—all offered to God in worship.
- Perfect Obedience to the Spirit: "Wherever the Spirit would go, they went" (1:12, 20). This is Christ's perfect obedience: "I always do the things that are pleasing to him" (John 8:29). Believers, indwelt by the Spirit, are being conformed to this same obedience (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16, 18).
- The Positive Terminus — and a Corroborating Sign: Revelation 4:6-8 shows the four living creatures around God's throne; in Revelation 21-22 they are absent. The cherubim's absence from Revelation 21-22 is a corroborating sign, not the bearer of the escalation — an absence supplies no "greater than." The escalation rests on the positive terminus Revelation 22:3-4 supplies: redeemed humanity sees God's face and serves at His throne, the sight denied even to Moses (Exodus 33:20).
Application: The cherubim show us our destiny—not as symbolic representations but as glorified humans dwelling in God's immediate presence. We will embody the fullness of life (rational, regal, serving, transcendent), move in perfect harmony with the Spirit, and worship God eternally. This is what Christ accomplished: restoring humanity to the ideal the cherubim represented.
The trajectory: Cherubim guard (Genesis 3:24) → Cherubim frame mercy seat (Exodus 25) → Cherubim's form revealed (Ezekiel 1) → Cherubim around throne (Revelation 4) → glorified humanity sees God's face and dwells with God, the cherubim absent (Revelation 22:3-4).
