Foundation Text
Deuteronomy 7:6
Hebrew Key Terms
- H6918 קָדוֹשׁ (qadosh) - holy, set apart, sacred
- H5971 עַם (am) - people, nation
- H5459 סְגֻלָּה (segullah) - treasured possession, special treasure
- H977 בָּחַר (bachar) - to choose, elect, select
Context: Moses explains why Israel must destroy the Canaanite nations and avoid intermarriage - not because of Israel's greatness, but because God has chosen them to be His holy people and treasured possession. This repeats and expands the covenant identity given at Sinai (Exodus 19:5-6), now emphasizing that election is by grace alone, not merit.
OT-to-OT Development
- Deuteronomy 7:7-8 - Immediately following context clarifies: God chose Israel not because they were numerous (they were "the fewest"), but because He loved them and kept His oath to the patriarchs
- Deuteronomy 10:15 - "Yet the LORD set His affection on your fathers and loved them, and He chose their descendants after them—you above all peoples, as it is today"
- Deuteronomy 14:2 - Nearly identical language: "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD has chosen you to be His treasured possession out of all the peoples on the face of the earth"
- Deuteronomy 26:18-19 - Israel's covenant commitment in response: "And the LORD has declared today that you are His people and treasured possession... that He will set you high above all the nations"
- 1 Kings 8:53 - Solomon's prayer: "For You singled them out from all the peoples of the earth to be Your inheritance"
The canonical trajectory shows election moving from conditional obedience (Exodus 19:5 "if you obey") to unconditional love (Deut 7:7-8 "because the LORD loved you"). This gracious foundation is crucial for the NT application to the church.

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme + Corporate Solidarity, Redemptive-Historical Progression — Israel's election as God's holy, treasured people, grounded in love rather than merit, develops as a theme from Sinai through the prophets to the new covenant, and is transferred to the church through union with Christ: believers are chosen "in Him before the foundation of the world" (Eph 1:4). No type is asserted here — the bounded institutional type in this trajectory is the Exodus 19:6 → 1 Peter 2:9 title transfer, and Deuteronomy 7:6, like its Sinai donor, carries no prospective marker of its own.
Christological Connection: Deuteronomy 7:6 ultimately points to Christ, the chosen Servant (Isaiah 42:1; Matt 12:18) who perfectly embodies holiness to God. God chose the church "in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence" (Eph 1:4). Israel's calling to be a holy people is taken up in the church's calling to holiness through union with the Holy One, Jesus Christ.
