Isaiah 43:20-21

Hebrew Key Terms

  • H5971 עַמִּי (ammi) - "My people"
  • H972 בָּחִיר (bachir) - chosen, elect
  • H3335 יָצַר (yatsar) - to form, fashion, create
  • H5608 סָפַר (saphar) - to declare, recount, proclaim
  • H8416 תְּהִלָּה (tehillah) - praise, song of praise

Context: In Isaiah 43, God promises restoration from Babylonian exile, comparing it to a new exodus. In verses 20-21, He declares His purpose for Israel: "My chosen people, the people I formed for Myself, that they might declare My praise." This restates Israel's covenant purpose from Exodus 19:5-6, now renewed in exile.

OT-to-OT Development

  • Exodus 19:5-6 - Original covenant purpose: treasured possession, kingdom of priests, holy nation
  • Isaiah 42:6-7 - Servant called to be "light for the Gentiles," extending covenant purpose to the nations
  • Isaiah 43:1 - "I have called you by your name; you are Mine" - covenant ownership and intimate relationship
  • Isaiah 43:7 - "Everyone called by My name and created for My glory, whom I have indeed formed and made" - creation language for covenant people
  • Isaiah 44:1-2 - "Jacob My servant... Israel whom I have chosen" - election reaffirmed
  • Isaiah 61:6 - "You will be called priests of the LORD, ministers of our God" - priestly purpose renewed
  • Psalm 102:18 - "A people not yet created will praise the LORD" - future generation formed to praise God

The canonical trajectory shows covenant purpose established (Exodus 19) → crisis of exile → purpose reaffirmed (Isaiah 43) → priestly identity renewed (Isaiah 61) → ultimate fulfillment in multiethnic church.

Connections

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment (primary) — Isaiah's reaffirmation of Israel's covenant purpose ("the people I formed for Myself, that they may proclaim My praise") is a prophetic promise fulfilled in the church's calling to "proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you" (1 Peter 2:9), with Christ as the true chosen Servant. Also Longitudinal Theme — this oracle is one of the prophetic reactivations by which the Sinai identity-titles are carried forward. The oracle's backward reach to creation and exodus (Isaiah 43:21 → Genesis 1; Isaiah 43:21 → Exodus 14) is a probable (B) interpretive blend, not a verbal citation, and that second-exodus lane is owned by TT 108; this Foundation Text cites those links rather than pressing them.

Christological Connection: Christ is the ultimate chosen Servant (Isaiah 42:1; Matt 12:18) who perfectly declares God's praise through His obedient life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection. He is the true Israel who fulfills the covenant purpose. The church, united to Christ, shares in His mission to declare God's praise to the nations (Matt 28:19-20). Through the Spirit, believers are God's new creation (2 Cor 5:17), formed in Christ to display the glories of redeeming grace (Eph 2:10; 1 Pet 2:9).
