Context: Hebrews 10:1-18 contrasts the Old Covenant's repeated, inadequate sacrifices with Christ's once-for-all, perfect sacrifice. Verses 10-14 are the climax.
Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct Institutional Type, Forward-Looking — the type anchored at Leviticus 16–17 → Hebrews 9–10) + Contrast — Christ's once-for-all sacrifice escalates beyond the repeated Levitical sacrifices (Hebrews 10:1-4): where the same sacrifices were "offered year after year," Christ "by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14), contrasting permanent with provisional. The skins of Genesis 3:21 belong to the theme's germ and are contrasted here as provisional covering, not typed: no NT text identifies the coats as a type, so within this trajectory the type-antitype structure rests on the Levitical sacrifices alone.
Christological Connection: Hebrews 10:10-14 declares Christ's superiority over the repeated Levitical sacrifices whose rationale Leviticus 17:11 states; the skins of Genesis 3:21 stand further back as the covering theme's provisional germ, contrasted but not typed. Animal skins covered temporarily; Christ's righteousness covers eternally. Animal blood was repeated endlessly (daily, yearly); Christ's sacrifice was "once for all" (ἐφάπαξ, ephapax, v. 10). The law "can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship" (10:1); Christ, "by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified" (10:14).
The theme's escalation (typology proper begins at the Levitical altar):
- Animal skins (Genesis 3:21): Adequate but temporary
- Sacrificial blood (Leviticus): Repeated endlessly, proving inadequacy
- Christ's body offered "once for all" (Hebrews 10:10): Perfect, permanent, complete
"We have been sanctified" (ἡγιασμένοι ἐσμέν, hēgiasmenoi esmen, perfect passive)—completed action with ongoing results. Christ's one sacrifice accomplished what countless animal sacrifices could not.
Application: Rest in Christ's finished work. He "has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified" (10:14). You are not becoming righteous through repeated efforts (like repeated sacrifices); you are already righteous through Christ's one sacrifice. Live from this security, not toward it.
