Greek Parallel (Rev 3:7):
- G2807 κλείς (kleís) - "key" - John uses the same imagery, applying it directly to Christ
Context: This verse forms the theological center of the Eliakim oracle. The "key of the house of David" represents comprehensive authority over the royal household and, by extension, the Davidic covenant promises. Opening and shutting with finality signifies irrevocable decisions—what Eliakim establishes cannot be overturned by human authority.
OT-to-OT Development
- The phrase "on his shoulder" connects to Isaiah 9:6: "the government will be upon His shoulders." Both texts point to ultimate Davidic authority. This is a genuine same-author, intra-Isaianic Promise-Fulfillment bridge, but a supporting one — the shared vocabulary reduces to שְׁכֶם alone, and the word recurs across a shared Isaianic shoulder-register (9:4; 10:27; 14:25), so it must not be graded as a verbal citation.
- The "house of David" recalls God's covenant with David (2 Sam 7:11-16) that promised an eternal kingdom. Eliakim's authority over this "house" is provisional; the eternal King will come from David's line.
- Judges 3:23-25 provides background: keys could lock people in or out, making key-possession a matter of life and death.
Connections
- TO:
- 2 Samuel 7:11-16 - Davidic covenant
- Isaiah 9:6 - government on shoulders
- 1 Chronicles 29:23 - throne belongs to Yahweh
- FROM OT:
- Zechariah 4:7-9 - Zerubbabel's hands finish the temple—similar irrevocable authority
- FROM NT:
- Matthew 16:19 - keys of kingdom given to church
- Revelation 1:18 - keys of Death and Hades
- Revelation 3:7 - Christ holds key of David
Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Backward-Looking) — Revelation 3:7 explicitly applies Isaiah 22:22 to Christ, confirming Eliakim's key-bearing authority as a divinely intended type of Christ's irrevocable authority over access to God's kingdom. The grade is Backward-Looking because the open/shut formula is standard Ancient Near Eastern language for royal administrative authority: the verse carries no prospective signal of its own, and the type's forward force is supplied retrospectively by Revelation 3:7 (matching the trajectory's "primarily Backward-Looking" grade in TT 049).
Christological Connection: Revelation 3:7 explicitly applies this verse to Christ, demonstrating that Eliakim was a prophetic type. Where Eliakim held keys to an earthly palace, Christ holds "the key of David"—authority over the Davidic kingdom and Messianic promises. Where Eliakim could grant or deny access to the king's presence, Christ grants or denies access to the Father (John 14:6). The "shoulder" imagery (Isa 22:22 and 9:6) shows that Christ bears the governmental weight that Eliakim could only temporarily symbolize. Christ's authority to "open and shut" extends to eternal salvation (Rev 1:18—keys of Death and Hades) and eschatological judgment (Rev 21:27—access to New Jerusalem).
