Greek Key Terms:
Context: Matthew 16:13-20 records Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi. Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter responds: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (v. 16). Jesus pronounces Peter blessed—this revelation came from the Father. He then declares: "I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" (vv. 18-19). The "keys" language echoes Isaiah 22:22, but now Christ—the ultimate Key-Bearer—delegates authority to His apostle(s) and, through them, to His church.
OT-to-OT Development:
Connections:
Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — Christ as ultimate Key-Bearer delegates "keys of the kingdom" to His church, fulfilling and escalating the Isaiah 22:22 pattern from palace access to eternal kingdom access through gospel proclamation.
Christological Connection: Christ's gift of keys to Peter/church reveals the relational structure of kingdom authority: (1) Christ as Ultimate Key-Holder: Revelation 3:7 confirms Christ "holds the key of David." He is the source, not the recipient, of all authority. (2) Derivative Authority: Jesus says "I will GIVE you the keys"—the church's authority is delegated, not inherent. Eliakim received his keys from God; the church receives its keys from Christ. (3) Gospel Ministry: The "keys of the kingdom" are exercised through gospel proclamation—opening the kingdom to those who believe, closing it to those who refuse. This corresponds to John 20:23: "If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain them, they are retained." (4) Church Discipline: Binding and loosing includes disciplinary authority (Matthew 18:18 extends this to the church). (5) Hades Cannot Prevail: The gates of Hades assault the church, but Christ—who holds "the keys of Death and Hades" (Rev 1:18)—ensures the church's ultimate victory. The church built by Christ and equipped with His keys will triumph.
