Zechariah 13:2-6

Context: Zechariah 13:2-6 is the postexilic prophet's vision of the "day" when the LORD of Hosts "will erase the names of the idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered" — and in the same breath, "I will also remove the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land" (v. 2). This is a deliberate inversion of Amos 7:14, where Amos disclaimed professional prophecy to validate his true calling; here false prophets disclaim it to hide their false calling. Verse 6's enigmatic "wounds between your arms" likely refers either to the self-mutilation of pagan prophetic practice (1 Kings 18:28; Jeremiah 16:6) now being hidden, or — as many interpreters have read it — to the residual marks of prior false-prophetic activity that the man now attempts to explain away as domestic accidents.
