Judges 11:9-11

Hebrew Key Terms

  • H7218 רֹאשׁ (rōʾš) - "head" - will I be your head?
  • H7101 קָצִין (qāṣîn) - "commander" - head and commander
  • H5414 נָתַן (nāṯan) - "give/deliver" - if the LORD delivers them to me
  • H5707 עֵד (ʿēḏ) - "witness" - The LORD is witness

Context: Jephthah negotiates terms for his return: "If you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?" (לְרֹאשׁ, leroʾsh, lit. "for a head"). The elders solemnly confirm with an oath: "The LORD is our witness if we do not do as you say." The people then formally installed Jephthah as "their leader and commander" (לְרֹאשׁ וּלְקָצִין, lit. "head and commander"). The term רֹאשׁ ("head") is shared with Psalm 118:22's cornerstone (לְרֹאשׁ פִּנָּה, lit. "head of the corner"), but only as a stock lexeme — a motif recurrence, not a verbal link.

OT-to-OT Development

  • The term רֹאשׁ ("head") recurs at Psalm 118:22—the rejected stone becomes the cornerstone (lit. "head of the corner"); the shared word is common (H7218), so the link is thematic, not verbal
  • Jephthah's exaltation parallels Joseph's rise from prison to vice-regent
  • The confirmation "in the presence of the LORD at Mizpah" (11:11) gives covenant weight to the arrangement

Connections

  • TO:
    • Psalm 118:22 - "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" (לְרֹאשׁ פִּנָּה, lit. "head of the corner")
    • Genesis 41:40 - Pharaoh exalts Joseph
  • FROM OT:
    • 1 Samuel 10:24 - Samuel presents Saul: "Do you see the one the LORD has chosen?"
  • FROM NT:
    • Acts 4:11 - "the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone"
    • Philippians 2:9 - "God exalted Him to the highest place"

Christological Connection: Jephthah's installation as "head" recurs as an instance of the pattern that culminates in Christ's exaltation. Jesus quoted Psalm 118:22 to religious leaders: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" (Matthew 21:42). Peter echoes: "This Jesus is 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone'" (Acts 4:11). The rejected one becomes the head to whom all must submit. Philippians 2:9-11: "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow." Like Gilead's elders coming to the expelled Jephthah, all creation will acknowledge the crucified Christ as Lord.

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme (primary) — Judges-era instance of the rejected-then-exalted deliverer pattern (Joseph → Moses → Jephthah → David → Ps 118:22 → Christ): the expelled man installed as "head" (roʾsh) over those who cast him out. Jephthah's roʾsh shares only the stock lexeme (H7218) with Ps 118:22 — a motif recurrence, not a verbal link. Analogy (secondary) — God's characteristic way of exalting the rejected one over his rejectors (1 Cor 1:26–29), carried through Christ, the rejected stone who has become the cornerstone. Not Typology — declined on Fairbairn-grounded audit per the parent TT 082 (correspondence fails at the level of office; Heb 11:32 commends Jephthah's faith, not a type).

Trajectory Table: 082 - Jephthah (Rejected Then Exalted)
