Zechariah 13:1

Hebrew Key Terms:

  • H4726 מָקוֹר maqor - fountain, spring, source (same lexeme Jer 2:13 uses for Yahweh)
  • H6605 פָּתַח pathach - to open (Niphal: "shall be opened")
  • H1004 בַּיִת bayit - house (construct: "the house of David")
  • H2403 חַטָּאת chattaʾt - sin, sin-offering
  • H5079 נִדָּה niddah - impurity, menstrual impurity, ritual uncleanness (shared lexeme with Num 19's water-of-purification)

Context: Zechariah 13:1 stands at the seam between the mourning-for-the-pierced-one oracle of 12:10-14 and the extended cleansing-of-the-land oracle of 13:2-6. The text reads: "On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness (le-chattaʾt u-le-niddah)." Two striking features: (1) the fountain is opened — it has been closed, now it is unlocked by divine action; (2) the cleansing covers two categories — chattaʾt (moral sin, requiring sin-offering) and niddah (ritual/ceremonial impurity, requiring the water-of-purification of Num 19). Zechariah joins what the Levitical system kept distinct: the blood that atones for sin and the water that cleanses impurity now flow from a single source. The chronological structure of Zech 12-14 establishes the causal order: the pierced one of 12:10 → the opened fountain of 13:1. The piercing causes the opening. This prophetic sequence becomes John 19:34's "blood and water" — the pierced Messiah from whose side both flow, the fountain now opened.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Numbers 19:9-22 - The water of purification (mei niddah) — Zech 13:1 uses niddah in direct echo. The water-for-impurity ritual is fulfilled in the opened fountain.
  • Jeremiah 2:13 - Yahweh as "fountain of living waters" (maqor mayim chayyim). Zech 13:1's "maqor opened" answers Jeremiah's diagnosis: the forsaken fountain now flows freely.
  • Ezekiel 36:25 - "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean" — Zech 13:1 converts Ezekiel's sprinkled water into an opened fountain.
  • Zechariah 12:10 - The immediately preceding "look on me, on him whom they have pierced" — the piercing that opens the fountain of 13:1.
  • Zechariah 14:8 - "Living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem" — 13:1's opened fountain becomes 14:8's flowing river.

  • FROM NT:
    • John 19:34 - blood and water from the pierced side (direct fulfillment)
    • John 19:37 - quotation of Zech 12:10 ("they will look on him whom they have pierced")
    • 1 John 1:7 - "the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin"
    • 1 John 5:6-8 - "the Spirit and the water and the blood" — the three witnesses echoing the opened fountain
    • Hebrews 10:22 - "our hearts sprinkled clean" paired with "bodies washed with pure water"

Christological Connection: Zechariah 13:1 is the prophetic seam that John 19 sews shut. The sequence of Zech 12:10 → 13:1 (pierced-one → opened fountain) is reproduced exactly in John 19:34-37: the soldier's spear pierces Jesus' side, blood and water flow immediately, and John quotes Zech 12:10 as Scripture fulfilled (John 19:37). The opened fountain is the pierced side of Christ. The dual cleansing Zechariah promises — for chattaʾt (moral sin) and niddah (ritual impurity) — corresponds to the dual flow from Christ's side: blood (atonement for sin, satisfying the chattaʾt need) and water (Spirit cleansing impurity, satisfying the niddah need). 1 John 5:6-8 picks up exactly this pairing: "This is he who came by water and blood... the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree." The escalation is decisive: the Levitical system kept blood-atonement and water-purification distinct (separate rites, separate occasions); Zechariah prophetically unites them in a single opened fountain; Christ's pierced side accomplishes the unification historically. "Opened" is the operative verb — the fountain that was shut, that Israel had forsaken (Jer 2:13), is now unlocked by the pierced Messiah. Christ is both the one pierced and the fountain opened; His death simultaneously causes the wound and releases the flow.

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment (primary) + Typology — Zechariah's promised "opened fountain" flowing from the pierced one (Zech 12:10 → 13:1) is directly fulfilled at the crucifixion (John 19:34, 37), cleansing from both sin (chattaʾt) and impurity (niddah); the water-of-purification ritual of Num 19 escalates to the fountain flowing from Christ's side.
