  • צֵלָע (ṣēlāʿ) - rib, side
  • בָּנָה (bānâ) - to build, fashion, construct

  • אִישָּׁה (ʾiššâ) - woman, wife

Context: Genesis 2:18-25 describes the creation of woman as Adam's suitable helper. After demonstrating that no animal suffices (2:18-20), God creates woman from Adam's side.

Christological Connection: Ephesians 5:30-32 explicitly identifies the one-flesh formula of Genesis 2:21-24 as speaking "about Christ and the church" (Eph 5:32). The type rests on that quotation; the side / sleep / built parallels below are supporting echoes cherished since the church fathers (Augustine, Chrysostom), not typology drawn by the NT itself:

Adam's Deep Sleep → Christ's Death: תַּרְדֵּמָה (tardēmâ, "deep sleep") is the same term for Abraham's prophetic trance (Genesis 15:12). God put Adam into a sleep resembling death. Christ entered the sleep of death on the cross.

Opened Side → Pierced Side: God opened Adam's side (צֵלָע, ṣēlāʿ) to take a rib. Christ's side was pierced: "one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out" (John 19:34). The church fathers saw the blood and water as symbols of the sacraments (Eucharist and Baptism) that give birth to the church.

Eve Built → Church Built: God "built" (בָּנָה, bānâ) the woman from Adam's rib. Christ "builds" His church (Matthew 16:18: "I will build My church"). The church is constructed from Christ's sacrifice.

One Flesh → Mystical Union: "they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). Paul says, "This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church" (Ephesians 5:32). Believers are "members of His body" (Ephesians 5:30); we are one with Christ. This — not the side/sleep/built echoes — is the NT-drawn connection on which the type rests.

Application: Every Christian marriage should image Christ's love for the church. Husbands: love as Christ loved—sacrificially, unto death. Wives: respond as the church responds—joyfully, trustingly. Marriage is not ultimately about you; it's about displaying the gospel.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Institutional Type — Forward-Looking; christological referent retrospectively disclosed, Eph 5:32) — the creation ordinance's own "For this reason" (עַל־כֵּן) projects the one-flesh pattern forward, and Paul discloses its designed-in referent when he speaks "about Christ and the church" (Ephesians 5:32). The type rests on the Eph 5:31-32 quotation of the one-flesh formula; Adam's deep sleep, opened side, and "built" bride are supporting echoes cherished since the church fathers, not typology drawn by the NT itself.
