Genesis 1:14-18

Hebrew Key Terms

Context: God creates sun, moon, and stars on day four, establishing them as "signs to mark the seasons and days and years." These luminaries govern day and night, mark time's passage, and structure creation's rhythms. The moon's monthly cycle provides the foundation for Israel's lunar calendar and new moon observances, demonstrating God's sovereignty over time itself.

Connections

Christological Connection: Genesis 1:14-18's luminaries frame the creation order that Christ fulfills and transcends. The sun governs day; Christ is "the sun of righteousness" (Malachi 4:2) and "the light of the world" (John 8:12). The moon marks seasons; Christ comes at the appointed moment: "when the time had fully come, God sent His Son" (Galatians 4:4). The appointed times (môʿădîm) established through lunar cycles—new moons, Passover, Feast of Tabernacles—all prefigured Christ: "These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body that casts it belongs to Christ" (Colossians 2:16-17). (The "new creation" of 2 Corinthians 5:17 is a canonical neighbor belonging to its own trajectory — חֹדֶשׁ and בָּרָא are distinct lemmas.) Where moon waxes and wanes, Christ's light shines constantly: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). (The "being renewed day by day" of 2 Corinthians 4:16 — ἀνακαινόω — likewise belongs to its own renewal trajectory.) The new creation eliminates dependence on created luminaries: "And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp" (Revelation 21:23). Creation's temporal rhythms—day and night, months and years—yield to eternity where God's servants "will reign forever and ever" (Revelation 22:5) in perpetual light. The "signs" (ʾōtōt) function finds ultimate expression in Christ as the sign par excellence: "this will be a sign to you" (Luke 2:12)—the incarnate God governing not just day and night but all creation.

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme (Rest/Worship cycle) — the creation frame: the day-four luminaries, set as "signs to mark the seasons" (môʿădîm), are the created groundwork of Israel's covenant calendar, not yet the institution. The type proper is the New Moon institution (Num 10:10; 28:11-15), which Colossians 2:16-17 names a shadow whose substance belongs to Christ; the lights this passage sets in the sky are fulfilled and transcended by Christ, "the light of the world" (John 8:12) and "the sun of righteousness" (Mal 4:2).
