Numbers 11:29

Hebrew Key Terms:

  • H5030 נָבִיא (nāḇîʾ) - prophet
  • H7307 רוּחַ (rûaḥ) - spirit
  • H5414 נָתַן (nāṯan) - to give, put

Context: "But Moses said to him, 'Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!'" Moses responds to Joshua's concern about Eldad and Medad prophesying in the camp. Rather than viewing the Spirit's work as a threat, Moses expresses a wish that anticipates Pentecost.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Exodus 31:3 - Spirit given to Bezalel for craftsmanship
  • Numbers 11:17, 25 - Spirit on Moses shared with seventy elders
  • 1 Samuel 10:6, 10 - Spirit comes on Saul; he prophesies
  • Joel 2:28 - Spirit poured on all flesh; sons and daughters prophesy

Connections:

Christological Connection: Moses's wish in Numbers 11:29 is the seedbed of Pentecost theology. When the Spirit came upon the seventy elders, they prophesied (Numbers 11:25), but two men (Eldad and Medad) prophesied in the camp rather than at the tabernacle. Joshua, jealous for Moses's authority, wanted them stopped. Moses's response is remarkable: rather than protecting his unique status, he longs for the Spirit to be given to ALL God's people. "Would that all the LORD's people were prophets!" This wish finds its fulfillment at Pentecost when the Spirit is poured out on "all flesh"—sons and daughters, young and old, servants male and female. What was exceptional in Moses's day (Spirit on select individuals) becomes normative in the new covenant. Moses mediated a limited Spirit; Christ mediates the universal Spirit. The Prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15) fulfills what Moses could only wish for.

Trajectory: Pentecost

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Forward-Looking), Promise-Fulfillment — Moses' wish that all God's people were prophets with the Spirit anticipates Pentecost's universal outpouring, fulfilled when the Prophet like Moses mediates the universal Spirit.
