Leviticus 3:5

Hebrew Key Terms:

  • H8002 שְׁלָמִים (shelamim) - "peace offerings, fellowship offerings"
  • H5930 עֹלָה (olah) - "burnt offering"
  • H7381 רֵיחַ (reach) - "scent, fragrance, aroma"
  • H5207 נִיחֹחַ (nichoach) - "soothing, pleasing"
  • H801 אִשֶּׁה (isheh) - "fire offering"

Context: The peace offering (שְׁלָמִים) is the only Levitical sacrifice where the worshiper partakes of the meat in a covenant meal. After the fat portions are burned on the altar "as a pleasing aroma to the LORD," the breast and right thigh go to the priests, and the remainder is eaten by the offerer and their family. This sacrificial meal celebrates reconciliation, communion, and covenant fellowship with God. The peace offering could be offered as thanksgiving, in fulfillment of a vow, or as a freewill expression of devotion. Significantly, it is burned on top of the burnt offering, symbolizing that fellowship with God rests upon the foundation of atonement.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Solomon's temple dedication features massive peace offerings (1 Kings 8:63) expressing covenantal joy
  • Amos condemns peace offerings when justice is absent (Amos 5:22)
  • Chronicles emphasizes peace offerings in worship restoration (2 Chronicles 29:35; 30:22)
  • Ezekiel's vision includes peace offerings in the eschatological temple (Ezekiel 45:15, 17)

Connections:

Christological Connection: The peace offering beautifully prefigures Christ's work of reconciliation and the believer's communion with God through Him. Christ is our peace (Ephesians 2:14), making peace through the blood of His cross (Colossians 1:20). Just as the peace offering was burned upon the burnt offering, our fellowship with God rests entirely upon Christ's atoning sacrifice. The covenant meal anticipates both the Lord's Supper—where believers commune with Christ—and the eschatological wedding feast of the Lamb. The "pleasing aroma" of the peace offering foreshadows the Father's delight in restored relationship with His people through the mediation of His Son.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking) — The peace offering's covenant meal celebrating reconciliation and fellowship typologically prefigures Christ's work of making peace through His blood (Colossians 1:20), with the sacrificial meal anticipating the Lord's Supper and the eschatological wedding feast.
