Context: Revelation 22:1-5 describes the New Jerusalem's life-giving features. Unlike any earthly water source, this river flows "from the throne of God and of the Lamb" (v. 1)—divine origin guarantees inexhaustible supply. The Tree of Life straddles both sides of the river, bearing monthly fruit and providing leaves "for the healing of the nations" (v. 2). This vision completes the biblical water trajectory from Eden's rivers (Gen 2:10-14) through wilderness rock-water (Exod 17:6) to Ezekiel's temple river (Ezek 47:1-12) to this eternal river of life.

OT-to-OT Development:

  • Genesis 2:10-14 describes Eden's river watering the garden and dividing into four headwaters.
  • Ezekiel 47:1-12 envisions water flowing from the eschatological temple, deepening as it flows, bringing life wherever it goes, with trees bearing monthly fruit whose leaves "are for healing."
  • Zechariah 14:8 prophesies: "On that day living waters will flow out from Jerusalem."
  • Joel 3:18 promises: "A fountain will flow out of the house of the LORD."

Connections:

  • TO OT: Genesis 2:10 (Eden's river), Ezekiel 47:1-12 (temple river), Zechariah 14:8 (living waters from Jerusalem), Joel 3:18 (fountain from the LORD's house)
  • FROM REVELATION: Revelation 21:6 (water of life freely), Revelation 7:17 (Lamb guides to springs of living water)
  • NT PARALLELS: John 7:37-39 (rivers of living water), John 4:14 (spring of water welling up to eternal life)

Christological Connection: The River of Life is the ultimate antitype to Bethesda: (1) Divine Source: Bethesda's water stirred mysteriously, perhaps by an angel (John 5:4, disputed); the River of Life flows "from the throne of God and of the Lamb"—unambiguous divine origin. (2) Inexhaustible Flow: Bethesda was a limited pool stirred occasionally; this river flows continuously, "clear as crystal." (3) Universal Healing: Bethesda healed one person at a time; the Tree of Life's leaves provide "healing for the nations"—comprehensive, global restoration. (4) Tree of Life: Bethesda stood in Jerusalem; the New Jerusalem has the Tree of Life, restoring what Adam lost. (5) Free Access: "Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life freely" (Rev 22:17). No competition, no "someone else goes in before me" (John 5:7)—all who thirst may drink. (6) Monthly Fruit: Bethesda's healing was unpredictable; the Tree bears fruit "every month"—reliable, abundant provision. (7) Lamb's Mediation: The river flows from "the throne of God AND of the Lamb"—Christ's atoning work secures eternal access to life's water. What Jesus began at Bethesda (healing by sovereign word) reaches cosmic completion in the eternal city.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Direct, Forward-Looking), Longitudinal Theme — The River of Life flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb consummates the biblical water trajectory from Eden through ceremonial washings to Christ, providing universal healing for the nations.
