Judges 14:6; Judges 15:14-15

Hebrew Key Terms

  • H6743 צָלַח (ṣālaḥ) - "rush upon/come mightily" - the Spirit came powerfully upon him
  • H7307 רוּחַ (rûaḥ) - "Spirit" - Spirit of the LORD
  • H8156 שָׁסַע (šāsaʿ) - "tear apart" - he tore the lion apart
  • H6310 פֶּה (peh) - "mouth/edge" - fresh jawbone
  • H5221 נָכָה (nākâ) - "strike/smite" - struck down a thousand men

Context: Two dramatic Spirit-empowerments are recorded. In 14:6: "The Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him" (וַתִּצְלַח עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהוָה), and Samson tore apart a young lion barehanded. In 15:14-15: bound with ropes and delivered to the Philistines, "the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him" (וַתִּצְלַח עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהוָה)—the ropes became like burnt flax, and he struck down a thousand men with a donkey's jawbone. The verb צָלַח means "to rush upon, overwhelm"—sudden, powerful divine enabling.

OT-to-OT Development

  • The Spirit "rushing upon" (צָלַח) appears with Saul (1 Samuel 10:6, 10; 11:6) and David (1 Samuel 16:13)
  • The pattern of impossible victories through divine power connects to Gideon's 300, Jonathan's two-man attack
  • The Spirit's action for military victory anticipates the Warrior-Messiah of Isaiah 11:1-5

Connections

Christological Connection: Samson's Spirit-empowered victories are an earlier instance of the pattern that reaches its definitive form in Christ's Spirit-anointed ministry. Jesus' casting out of demons demonstrated Spirit-empowerment: "But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you" (Matthew 12:28). Peter preached "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil" (Acts 10:38). The correspondence is analogical, not typological: the God who empowered Samson by his Spirit against lion and Philistines anointed his Christ by the same Spirit against the adversary who "prowls around like a roaring lion" (1 Peter 5:8). The contrast is as instructive as the likeness: Samson's victories were episodic, physical, and national; Christ's victory over the powers through the cross and resurrection is complete, spiritual, and cosmic.

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme (primary) — the Spirit's rushing (צָלַח) on Samson at 14:6 and 15:14 is the Judges-era form of the Spirit-empowered-deliverer pattern, carried by the same verb into the monarchy (1 Sam 10:6; 16:13) and culminating in Christ's Spirit-anointing (Isa 61:1; Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38). Analogy (secondary) — as God empowered Samson by his Spirit to deliver Israel, so God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power to deliver those oppressed by the devil. Contrast (tertiary) — Samson's empowerment was episodic and violent; Christ's anointing is permanent and restoring. Typology is not claimed.
