Foundation Text
Habakkuk 2:4
Hebrew Key Terms
- H6662 צַדִּיק (tsaddiq) - righteous, just
- H0530 אֱמוּנָה (emunah) - faith, faithfulness, steadfastness
- H2421 חָיָה (chayah) - live, have life
Context: In the midst of prophesying Babylon's invasion of Judah, Habakkuk receives God's answer: the proud oppressor will fall, but "the righteous will live by faith." This verse becomes one of the most quoted OT texts in the NT, foundational to Paul's doctrine of justification.
OT-to-OT Development
- This verse shares the roots of believing and righteousness (אמן / צדק) with Genesis 15:6 (Abraham's faith credited as righteousness), though not the same words; Paul sets the two texts side by side (Rom 1:17 with 4:3; Gal 3:6 with 3:11), and the verse anticipates the faith-principle of the new covenant
- Paul later sets it against Leviticus 18:5 (Gal 3:11-12) - life not by doing but by faith; Habakkuk himself does not draw that contrast
- Deuteronomy 30:6 anticipates God circumcising hearts to love Him - the internal transformation enabling faith
- Jeremiah 31:31-34 promises the new covenant where God writes law on hearts, enabling faithful obedience
Connections
- TO:
- Genesis 15:6 - Abraham believed and it was counted as righteousness
- Deuteronomy 30:6 - heart transformation
- FROM OT:
- No direct OT quotations, but principle assumed in Psalms of trust (Ps 37:3-5; 62:8)
- FROM NT:
- Romans 1:17 - gospel reveals righteousness by faith
- Galatians 3:11 - no one justified by law
- Hebrews 10:38 - righteous live by faith, not shrink back
Christological Connection: The "righteous will live by faith" principle finds ultimate fulfillment in union with Christ. Romans 1:17 identifies the gospel as revealing "the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" Galatians 3:11 uses this verse to prove justification is by faith in Christ, not law-works. Hebrews 10:38 applies it to perseverance in faith, not shrinking back. Christ is both the object of saving faith and the one who perfectly demonstrated faith/faithfulness to the Father. United to Christ by faith, believers receive His righteousness and live by His life (Gal 2:20: "The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God").
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme, Promise-Fulfillment — "The righteous will live by faith" articulates the canonical theme of justification by faith that runs from Genesis 15:6 through Paul's doctrine of salvation, finding ultimate fulfillment in union with Christ who is both the object and exemplar of saving faith.
