Exodus 17:5-7

Hebrew Key Terms:

Context: At Rephidim in the wilderness of Sin, the people of Israel quarreled with Moses, demanding water. Finding no natural source, they tested the LORD, saying "Is the LORD among us or not?" God commanded Moses to take the staff with which he struck the Nile and strike the rock at Horeb. When Moses obeyed, water gushed out abundantly for the people to drink. Moses named the place Massah (Testing) and Meribah (Quarreling) because of Israel's contention and testing of the LORD.

Connections:

Christological Connection: Exodus 17:5-7 becomes foundational for understanding Christ as the Rock struck for His people's provision. Paul's explicit identification in 1 Corinthians 10:4—"the Rock was Christ"—isn't arbitrary allegory but recognizes the pre-incarnate Christ's presence with Israel. The rock-striking prefigures Christ's crucifixion with remarkable precision: (1) The rock is struck with the rod of judgment—Christ bears God's wrath for sin; (2) The striking is singular and decisive—Christ dies "once for all" (Hebrews 7:27); (3) From the struck rock flows water for the thirsty—from Christ's wounded side flows "blood and water" (John 19:34) providing cleansing and life; (4) God stands at the rock (v. 6)—the Father ordains the Son's suffering; (5) The staff that struck Egypt's waters in judgment now strikes the rock in provision—Christ bears judgment that we might receive blessing; (6) The rock provides abundantly—Christ satisfies completely those who come to Him thirsty (John 7:37: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink"). The contrast with Numbers 20 becomes significant: the rock needed striking only once, then should be spoken to. Moses' repeated striking violated the type—to strike Christ twice would be to "crucify the Son of God all over again" (Hebrews 6:6). Christ's once-for-all sacrifice provides perpetual living water to all who believe. The water flowing from Horeb's rock sustained physical life in the wilderness; the Spirit flowing from Christ the struck Rock provides eternal life in this present evil age.

Connection Method(s): Typology (Providential, Forward-Looking) — The rock struck by the rod of judgment yielding life-giving water typologically prefigures Christ struck at Calvary, from whose pierced side flowed blood and water (John 19:34), as Paul explicitly identifies: "the Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4).
