Hosea 6:6BSB
For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Jesus' second use of Hosea 6:6 applies the prophet's priority of mercy over sacrifice to Sabbath interpretation. The moral law (mercy, compassion for human need) takes precedence over ritual/ceremonial regulations when they conflict. Jesus demonstrates that proper Sabbath observance serves human flourishing rather than burdening people with restrictive traditions. As Lord of the Sabbath, he has divine authority to interpret Torah correctly, revealing that God desires covenant faithfulness expressed through mercy rather than mere external compliance with ritual.
