Isaiah 29:13BSB
Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is but rules taught by men.
Isaiah condemned his generation's lip-service worship that honored God externally while their hearts remained distant. Jesus applies the identical critique to Pharisaic religion, demonstrating that this pattern of external religiosity without genuine heart transformation recurs across redemptive history. The problem is not merely individual hypocrisy but systemic elevation of human tradition to divine authority. Jesus demands authentic worship flowing from transformed hearts, not mere compliance with human regulations masquerading as divine commands. What was true in Isaiah's day remains true in Jesus' era.
