Significance

Classic example of Matthew's typology where Hosea's original reference to the Exodus is applied to Jesus. Jesus recapitulates Israel's history but succeeds where corporate Israel failed. This establishes Jesus as the true Israel, the faithful Son who perfectly obeys the Father. Matthew sees Jesus not merely predicted by OT but reliving Israel's story in his own life. Text-form note: Matthew's "out of Egypt I called My Son" follows the MT's singular ("My son") against the LXX's plural ("his children") — the singular is exactly what the christological/corporate reading requires, reinforcing the Corporate-Solidarity mechanism.
