Earlier text
When brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother is to take her as his wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her. The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.
Earlier text
Genesis 38:8BSB
Then Judah said to Onan, "Sleep with your brother's wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother."
Sadducees cite levirate marriage law to construct what they consider a reductio ad absurdum argument against resurrection. Jesus responds on two levels: first, by distinguishing resurrection life from current existence (no marriage in resurrection), and second, by proving resurrection from the Torah itself (Exodus 3:6), which Sadducees accepted as most authoritative. This demonstrates Jesus' superior hermeneutical skill and exposes the Sadducees' failure to understand either Scripture or God's power.
