Earlier text

Isaiah 34:4BSB

All the stars of heaven will be dissolved. The skies will be rolled up like a scroll, and all their stars will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like foliage from the fig tree.

Earlier text

Daniel 7:13-14BSB

In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw One like the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence. And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship, that the people of every nation and language should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and His kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Zechariah 12:10-14BSB

Then I will pour out on the house of David and on the people of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and prayer, and they will look on Me, the One they have pierced. They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son. On that day the wailing in Jerusalem will be as great as the wailing of Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. The land will mourn, each clan on its own: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, and all the remaining clans and their wives.

Significance

Jesus combines multiple OT passages depicting the Day of the Lord into a composite vision of his return. The cosmic imagery (whether literal or metaphorical) describes unprecedented divine intervention. Daniel's Son of Man receiving universal dominion identifies Jesus as the divine messianic figure. Zechariah's mourning over the pierced one suggests recognition and repentance when people see whom they crucified. This eschatological collage demonstrates how various OT judgment and salvation oracles converge in Christ's parousia, the climactic act of redemptive history.
