This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Exodus 24:8BSB

So Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."

Significance

At Sinai, after Israel pledged "All that the LORD has spoken we will do" (Exod 24:7), Moses sprinkled the sacrificial blood on the people and named it dam ha-berit — "the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you" (24:8) — the shed blood ratifying the bilateral bond between Yahweh (the altar) and Israel (the people). At the Last Supper Jesus deliberately reaches for that singular formula: "This is My blood of the covenant" (τοῦτο… ἐστιν τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης), reproducing the LXX phrase τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης (inserting only the possessive μου) — identifying His own blood as the covenant-ratifying blood Moses once threw on the people. The pairing is tiered Allusion rather than Direct Quotation because the formula is unmarked — woven into the words of institution, not introduced as a citation (matching the sibling Mark 14:24 pairing). The link is typological with historical escalation, not a mere thematic echo: both Sinai and Calvary are real covenant-inaugurations, but the type is escalated in every dimension — the blood of bulls becomes the Mediator's own blood, the application moves from the body to the cleansed conscience (cf. Heb 9:14), and a covenant Israel could and did break gives way to one God Himself keeps. It is Typology rather than bare Longitudinal Theme because Exod 24:8 supplies the unique source-formula (it occurs only here in the Pentateuch) and Jesus reads Himself as its fulfillment; it is also Promise-Fulfillment because Matthew fuses the Exod 24:8 phrase with the new-covenant promise of Jer 31:31-34, adding "for the forgiveness of sins" (εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν) to activate Jeremiah's "I will remember their sin no more" (this pair is scoped to the Exod 24:8 "blood of the covenant" half; the Jeremiah strand is carried by the companion IP). The telos is not that Christ merely resembles Moses, but that the blood I am invited to drink is poured out for me, for the forgiveness of sins — the covenant is no longer a contract I must keep on pain of breaking it, but a feast at which the King gives His own life to bind me to Himself forever; to behold that cup is to taste a covenant-keeping love worth wanting above all things.
