Earlier text
Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Jesus strategically omits the first table (duties toward God) and focuses on social obligations to test the man's functional idolatry—his wealth. The addition "do not defraud" reflects Leviticus 19:13 and Malachi 3:5, particularly relevant for wealthy individuals. The man's claim to have kept these "from my youth" sets up Jesus' penetrating diagnosis: he lacks "one thing"—total commitment to God through renouncing wealth (10:21). The commandments serve pedagogically to expose the man's true allegiance and his failure to love God wholeheartedly, illustrating that external law-keeping doesn't indicate heart transformation.
