Mark 3:29 → Numbers 15:30-31

Allusion

Later text

Mark 3:29BSB

But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.”

Earlier text

Numbers 15:30-31BSB

But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native or foreigner, blasphemes the LORD. That person shall be cut off from among his people. He shall certainly be cut off, because he has despised the word of the LORD and broken His commandment; his guilt remains on him.”

Significance

Numbers 15:30-31 distinguishes between unintentional sin (forgivable through sacrifice) and high-handed rebellion (unforgivable, resulting in being cut off). Calling the Holy Spirit's work demonic constitutes willful, persistent rejection of God's evident grace—high-handed sin. This isn't about a single slip but sustained, hardened opposition to obvious divine work. The unforgivability stems from permanent rejection of the only means of forgiveness.

G.K. Beale, Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament (2007) — TOSK's Mark 3:29 entry does not carry Numbers 15:30-31, and neither Matthew Henry's nor John Gill's commentary on Mark 3:29 references the high-handed-sin passage.
